In December of 2009 MCC received a grant from the Carpenter Foundation to be administered by the Office and Formation and Leadership Development to help defray the educational indebtedness of current students or those who are recent seminary graduates (within the last five years) and who are called to serve a small MCC congregation (with an average weekly attendance of 75 or less). These funds will be awarded to successful applicants to be used as an interest free loan to pay educational debt; the person who serves three years in the church placement made possible by this loan will have the loan forgiven in full.

Loans will be up to a maximum of $5000.00 for a period of one year. Applications may be initiated by students or by churches. Applications must be received by both student and church before a loan will be granted.

Students
Students who apply for these funds must be

  • Enrolled in or be a recent graduate from an ATS accredited seminary,
  • ‘In Care’ with MCC
  • Close to completion of their MAP and ready to be interviewed for ordination or ordained
  • Be ready to accept a call to a small MCC congregation

Applications from Students must include

- An essay on their calling to minister in a small church setting which would include an understanding of their pastoral style based on church size theory.
- An overview of their current educational indebtedness (e.g. student loans), their plan for addressing that debt, and a statement about the ways Carpenter funds would make it possible for them to accept a call to serve a small MCC congregation.
- The endorsement of an Elder, the endorsement of the Office of Formation and Leadership Development, a letter of recommendation from an MCC Pastor.

Churches
Churches that apply for these funds must be

  • Current on their monthly contribution (tithes) to MCC and quarterly assessments to the MCC Board of Pensions (USA).
  • Have an average weekly worship attendance of under 75 people.
  • Ready to call a settled pastor.

Applications from Churches must include

- A copy of the current church budget and most recent monthly financial report.
- A copy of their current pastoral search packet (if the church is currently in a pastoral search and if a packet is available) and a statement of support from the Elder.
- A comparison of ministerial salaries in their geographical area according to church size and their plan to pay their pastor a comparable wage.
- A written statement demonstrating how financial assistance from the Carpenter grant would help to achieve the church’s salary plan.

Churches are also required to work with their Elder to develop a salary plan for continued employment of the pastor beyond the first year of the grant award.
